Homeschool Week #1: Maybe this can Work!

The flower pictured above grew up entwined among our hot peppers in our little garden! I went out to check the garden yesterday and was so happily surprised!! I love when this happens; such a gift! It's one of life's GOOD surprises!

This morning I am thinking back over our first week of school and maybe a little surprised, also in a good way, that it's behind us and we got quite a bit done!

*Showers for the kids start at 7 a.m.
*Breakfast is at 8 a.m.
*School is immediately started after breakfast! Whoever is out of the shower starts!

Learning involves way more than just book stuff!
*Kids are learning to wait for mom to finish explaining to one person to get their turn.
*Kids are learning to come when Mom disturbs their play to tell them it is their turn!
*Mom is slowly learning to pace herself and not treat every day like a sprint!

The house is saved by total demise as each child has one assigned chore a day and one chore they choose from a list of what else needs to be done.

My favorite part of the week was when 5 out of 6 of the kids helped me make cookies for our first Youth Group meeting (the missing one was at soccer practice)!  We made about 100 chocolate chip cookies, enough to take to church while still getting to keep some! By the way, did you know that you can grate butter with a cheese grater so you don't have to soften it ahead of time? Thank you, Pinterest!!

The first week of school is always a bit messy as we set up a routine and schedule that works for the whole family! But despite all of that I am so thankful for the happy surprises along the way! God is good! We can do this!! :)

  1. I looked at the pictures before I read all of the post and I thought 'Is she grating butter?'. Lol! Then I read the rest of the post. That is a good tip, will have to try that. Those children are beautiful! All of them, Rachel included. They all look so happy.
